Setup VPN Access in Windows

A VPN connection allows you to have a direct encrypted connection with the server. VPN is not a 100% secure way to go, but it does help better secure what you do have.

Step 1

Open up your Network Connections panel.
Start -> Control Panel -> Network and Internet Connections -> Network Connections

Step 2

Create the new VPN connection by clicking:
File -> New Connection

  1. Connect to the Internet at my workplace
  2. Virtual Private Network Connection
  3. Company Name: BackupBus
  4. If you have the option, Do not dial the initial connection.
  5. Host name: USERNAME.backupbus.com
  6. If you have the option, Do not use my smart card
  7. Finish
Your username and password are the same as what you use to login to BackupBus.

Step 3

  1. Right click on your connection listed under Network Connections and go to Properties.
  2. Click the Networking tab
  3. In the box under "This connection uses the following items:", uncheck File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks
  4. In the same box, click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and go to Properties
  5. Click Advanced
  6. Uncheck the "Use default gateway on remote network" checkbox
  7. Click Okay to the 3 boxes up

Step 4

Connect to your VPN:
Start -> Connect To -> BackupBus
Once you are connected to your VPN, you will connect to BackupBus via the IP address 10.12.12.1 - use this instead of USERNAME.backupbus.com for all other services, as this is the connection through your VPN.
